Although most 'Textual Materials' that will be placed on our 'Web Site' will be 'Formatted' in 'Plain Text', some, especially 'Longer' and more 'Detailed' Items which will be considered 'Documents' will, of necessity, be 'Stored' in a different 'Format'.  The 'Format of Choice' for 'Storage and Retrieval' of 'Documents and Document Type Items' is 'Portable Document Format (PDF)'.  Adobe (A Software Company) made this 'Format' popular about 10 years ago.  Almost 100% of businesses and most individuals who 'Transfer' 'Documents' from one system to another use 'PDF' to 'Facilitate' 'Document Transfers'.  In order to 'Facilitate' efficient and effective 'Document' 'Storage', 'Retrieval', 'Viewing' and 'Printing', we will be using Adobe Principles/Software which produces 'Documentation' in 'PDF'.

Adobe Acrobat Reader

is required to 'Access', 'View', and 'Print' all 'Documents and Document Type Items' provided by USS Brinkley Bass DD-887 Association.  If you have and use Acrobat Reader 5.0 or 'Newer', you should be ready to 'Access' the provided materials.  If you do not have 'Acrobat Reader' or you want to acquire the most recent version (7.0)Click on the 'Acrobat Download' 'Button' below to 'GO TO'  'Adobe.Com' to acquire 'Acrobat Reader 7.0'.

Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF)

Invented by Adobe Systems and perfected over 15 years, Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) lets you capture and view robust information — from any application, on any computer system — and share it with anyone around the world. Individuals, businesses, and government agencies everywhere trust and rely on Adobe® PDF to communicate their ideas and vision.

Portable Document Format (PDF)

Portable Document Format (PDF) is an open file format created and controlled by Adobe Systems, for representing two-dimensional documents in a device independent and resolution independent fixed-layout document format. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a 2D document (and, with the advent of Acrobat 3D, embedded 3D documents) that includes the text, fonts, images, and 2D vector graphics that compose the document. PDF files do not encode information that is specific to the application software, hardware, or operating system used to create or view the document. This feature ensures that a valid PDF will render exactly the same regardless of its origin or destination (but depending on font availability).

Anyone may create applications that read and write PDF files without having to pay royalties to Adobe Systems; Adobe holds a number of patents relating to the PDF format but licenses them on a royalty-free basis for use in developing software that complies with its PDF specification.[1]

PDF files are most appropriately used to encode the exact look of a document in a device-independent way. While the PDF format can describe very simple one page documents, it may also be used for many pages, complex documents that use a variety of different fonts, graphics, colors, and images.

Top Features of Acrobat 7.0

Lets you view and print Adobe PDF files on a variety of hardware and operating system platforms.

Play back a variety of embedded multimedia content, such as QuickTime and MP3 files.

Read and organize high-fidelity e-books.

Activate search and accessibility capabilities built into your PDF files.

Display Adobe Photoshop Album slide shows and electronic cards.

Why use PDF?

If you want to transfer files by email or the Web to other computer users and to ensure that your files are readable, the safest option is to convert them to PDF. Other computer users will not always have the appropriate software to view your text and graphics files but the software to read PDF files is free and widely installed. PDF is frequently used as a 'print-friendly' format which can be made widely available from the Web.

PDF files will appear exactly the same whatever computer you use, so a PDF file made from a document which was originally formatted in Word will look exactly the same on someone else's machine as it did on yours. This is true even if graphics were embedded in the original file.

PDF is:

  • Widely used
  • A compressed format
  • Viewable on any computer - formatted as it left the author
  • Able to include any text, tables or graphics as a single file
  • Printable

Bill 'Smokey' Stover - Association Historian/Web Manager/Technical Advisor

After about 60 to 80 hours of experimenting and testing, I have decided that the only effective and efficient 'Method' of 'Sharing' 'Documents' and 'Printed Material' with all of those 'Association Members' and 'Bass Veterans', is 'Storing and Retrieving' in 'Portable Document Format (PDF)'.

I have invested $1000s in 'Hardware' and 'Software'.  I have all of the necessary "Equipment' to 'Facilitate' 'Planting' all 'Documents' in this 'Format'.  There are hundreds of 'Documents' that can and will be 'Provided' for the 'Viewing' 'Pleasure' of 'Association Members' and 'Bass Veterans'.

If you are reading this 'Tutorial', you are 'Considering' 'Viewing' some of these 'Documents'.  The PDF Reader is 'FREE'.  There are a number of 'Prerequisites' and 'System Requirements' that you should consider as you think about 'ACCESS', 'VIEWING', and 'PRINTING' these 'Documents'.

Prerequisites:

1.  Computer System with at least 1.0 Gig Clock Speed.

2.  High Speed - High Density Hard Drive - 40 to 100 Gig (Minimum).

3.  At least a Gig of Memory.

4.  At least a CD Reader / DVD Preferable.

5.  Have a good printer - Color preferable.

6.  If your system is 'Older' or 'Slower' then you may require an 'Older' version of the 'Reader'.

7.  Find, Download, and Use the Acrobat Document Reader.  There is no alternative.  If you hope to 'Access' 'View' and 'Print' these 'Documents' you must 'Acquire' and 'Use' the 'Reader'.

The process of 'Acquiring' the 'Reader' is very 'Simple'.  Find the 'Reader', 'Download' it, and 'Install' the 'Reader' and you will be ready to take advantage of the many 'Transferrable' 'Documents' that will be 'Provided' on this Web Site.

'Click' on any of the 'Acrobat Download Buttons' to start the 'Process.
